Product Description

Through detailed research and analysis the report examines the crucial factors and industry sectors of the reefer market.

The logistics of the reefer industry:

The dramatic changes in logistical demands over the last five years The industry’s reaction to these demands Consolidation amongst owners and operators - both in the container and specialised reefer industries

The demand for cargo:

Break-down of reefer trade commodities Trade routes and the major import regions Increase of seaborne reefer trade External factors influencing growth levels

The supply of tonnage:

Decline of specialised reefer fleet Developments and innovations for the reefer fleets

Move towards containerisation

The Reefer Shipping report provides key insights into the industry and the future growth of the market. Its data and analysis include: Analysis of historic reefer cargo growth and forecast continued growth to 2015 Percentage increase of container tonnage to 2010 Factors affecting the long-term growth of the industry including lack of investment in the specialised reefer industry Factors affecting the future of the reefer industry including consolidation and investment

Main findings

Reefer Shipping 2006/07 report provides an independent and detailed assessment of the reefer market, analysing its current status in light of reports elsewhere of its pending demise. The move towards containerisation is balanced by a call for initiatives to boost the future growth of the reefer industry. Focussing on the changing patterns in the cold chain, the report will evaluate the logistics of the reefer industry, the demand for cargo, the supply of tonnage, reefer ship economics and the future of the reefer industry.

Logistics

Analysing the dramatic changes in the reefer industry due to demand driven by receivers of the cargo, particularly the UK supermarkets. It notes the current degree of consolidation amongst owners and operators, increasing market opportunities and economies of scales.

Demand for cargo

World trade in reefer cargoes has increased from 72.2 million tonnes in 1994 to 105.4 million tonnes in 2004 - a compound annual growth of approximately 3.9 per cent. Positive growth rates are expected to continue with an average annual increase of 3.7 per cent between 2005 and 2015. Based on these findings, the report is able to project future levels of world reefer imports and estimates world reefer trade growing from 108.6 million tonnes in 2005 to 156.2 million tonnes in 2015.

Supply of tonnage

The specialised reefer fleet (of vessels greater than 100,000 cubic feet) has declined in number from a level of 880 vessels on the 1st January 1999 to 791 vessels on the 1st January 2006. Conversely, the container fleet has increased significantly - approximately 3,600 vessels on 1st January 2006 and a further 1,200 or so on order at that time. As a consequence, container capacity - in TEU terms - is forecast to increase by over 50 per cent between 2006 and 2010. The existing container fleet provides 1.05 million TEUs of reefer capacity, offering approximately 1,052 million cubic feet of reefer capacity. The specialised reefer fleet provides 291 million cubic feet of under-deck capacity equalling 22 per cent of overall reefer capacity.

Reefer industry outlook

The report predicts the stagnation - and eventual reduction - of the specialised reefer fleet, whilst container capacity will increase over the next three to four years. Cargo volumes are forecast to increase and while this will inevitably lead to a reduction in market share for the specialised reefer vessels, it may not result in a reduction in actual tonnage carried by the specialised reefer fleet.
Despite successful efforts to consolidate and cut costs, future initiatives are crucial to the survival of this market. The specialised reefer industry needs to focus on alternate ways of ensuring its longevity to maintain healthy competition in the reefer market.
